It’s a plain English, professional guide that’s got no time for hustle culture and I’d highly recommend it to anyone thinking of a freelance career. An absolute must-read.
If you're thinking about freelancing or already doing some freelance work, this book is a really practical and approachable guide.
I ended up reading half of it in one sitting because the writing style is so clear and engaging. It’s easy to follow, practical, and full of advice you can actually implement in real life.
One thing I really appreciated was how comfortable the book is to read. The font size is generous (which I personally value because I struggle with very small print).
The sections on finances and organisation were especially useful for me. The advice about setting aside around 30% of income for taxes and pension was a real eye-opener. It’s one of those simple pieces of guidance that can make a huge difference, and it immediately made me rethink how I approach my own finances.
I also found the networking advice very helpful. The part about preparing for networking and developing an elevator pitch was particularly valuable and gave me some practical ideas I want to start applying.
Overall, this is a very practical, encouraging, and easy-to-read guide that makes freelancing feel much more manageable. I learned several things I didn’t know before, and it’s the kind of book that makes you want to take action straight away.
I loved how practical this book was and how easy it was to follow. This isn’t just a guide for beginners either. I’ve been in business as a freelancer for 10+ years and it was a great reminder of some of the things I’ve not been doing and that I’m now starting to implement. Thank you Emma!
In the long and chequered history of freelancing, no-one has ever considered the importance or relevance of penguins in how a freelancer makes most sense of this way of life/working, and is able to best navigate it. Until now. As a freelancer of over 20 years, this is the book I wish I’d had with me from day 1 to better celebrate the highs (and endure the lows) of ‘doing it’ – and to know what might be lurking around the next corner that no-one usually talks about…
This is the first of Nina’s books I’ve read, and what an absolute delight it was. A great reminder of the importance of creativity. My absolute favourite line from the book is “It’s how you make sense of the world, and it’s how we show up as ourselves.” I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a little reminder now and then about what creativity is, and how our lives can be so much richer if we embrace it, in whatever guise works for us.
I loved this book. Creativity is an important part of all our lives and Nina’s doodles and her take on it, really makes me smile.
